An advertorial is an advertisement in the form of an editorial. The advertisement is usually written in the form of an objective article and designed to look like a legitimate and independent story. Often referred to as a Sponsored Post in the blogging community.

anchor text

The anchor text, link label or link text is the visible, clickable text in a link. The more relevant the keywords used in the anchor text, the higher the quality of the link in regards to SEO.


A backlink is an incoming link to a website or web page.

banner ad

A banner ad is a graphic or image that links to a website or web page.


A blogroll is a list of hyperlinks on a blog to other blogs or websites.


CPA is the “cost per action” associated to an advertisement.  The action occurs when a visitor creates a transaction or purchase originating from that advertisement.


CPC is the “cost per click” associated to an advertisement. A blogger earns money for each click on the advertisement.


CPM is “cost per thousand” ad impressions associated to an advertisement.  It’s an industry standard measure for selling ads on Web sites. The M is from the Roman numeral which stands for 1,000.

contextual link

A contextual link is a text link that is embedded within content such as a content rich article or post. The content that surrounds the link should provide insight or relevant keywords, ultimately creating a higher quality link and improved SEO.

Google PageRank

Google PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page and used by the Google Internet search engine, that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set.

guest post

A blog post created by someone not affiliated with the website on which the post was published. I will add that I consider it to be an independent writer or blogger that is not trying to place a comercial text link on my site.

link builder / link buyer

A link builder / buyer is someone that is attempting to place text links on your site to their website or their client’s website. Can also be referred to as an advertiser.

link exchange

A reciprocal link exchange is an agreement between two bloggers or website administrators to place a text link to the other’s website.  The link is often placed in a blogroll or a links page.

link popularity

Also known as backlinks and incoming links, this refers to the number of other sites linking to yours.


A page view (PV) or page impression is a request to load a single HTML file (page) of an Internet site. Includes duplicate views by the same visitor.


Search engine optimization is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines.


A search engine results page (SERP), is the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query.

social reach

The audience you have access to through all your social network profiles.

sponsored post

A sponsored post is when a blogger receives payment to publish a post or page provided by the sponsor or link builder.

text link

A text link is a plain HTML hyperlink that does not involve a graphic. This is the most common type of link desired on the web for navigational and SEO purposes.

unique visitor

Individuals visiting a website within a specific time period. Each visitor is counted once and classified as either “first time” or “prior visitor.”
